HERBERT KAPPLER
(1907 - 1978) German SS-functionary and head of police and security services (Sicherheitspolizei and SD) in Rome during the Second World War, responsible for the Ardeatine massacre. Sentenced to life imprisonment yet escaped from prison shortly before his death. Signature in black ink on the verso of a 5.75 x 4 in. postcard, adding the place and date 'Gaeta, Jan. 3, 1964'. He adds the note: 'I have admired this beautiful countryside�and I thank you for the pleasant memory�' Fine.
