ANTIQUE 19TH CENT RUSSIAN ICON CHRIST PANTOCRATOR
An antique late 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon depicts Jesus in the Christ Pantocrator iconography, known in the Western Christianity as Christ in Majesty. Jesus is holding a book with a citation from Matthew, 11:29, Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Inscription Jesus Christ, Lord Pantocrator in Church Slavonic in the upper part. Depictions of Saint Eudokia and Saint Alexius of Rome on the border part of the icon, named kovcheg in Russian.
