ORIENTAL LITHOGRAPH OF A WOMAN BY AUDSLEY GAULARD
A color lithograph in dark tones depicting a Japanese woman in a forest. Section IV, Plate IX from The Art of Chromolithography : Popularly Explained and Illustrated by Forty-Four Plates Showing Separate Impressions of All the Stones Employed. Published in 1883 by Sampson Low and Co., Imp. Lemercier & Cie., as indicated underneath Design by G.A. Audsley, signed in the lower left. Print by Gaulard, signed in the lower right. George Ashdown Audsley, 1838-1925, was an American architect and designer. Audsley and his brother authored lavishly illustrated books on ornament and Japanese art, as well as personally illuminated versions of great literature.
