SPANISH AMERICAN ROMANCE PRINT BY XAVIER GONZALES
Xavier Gonzalez or Gonzales, Spanish, American, 1898 to 1993, aquatint print on paper, Romance in Central Park, 1963. Signed and dated, November 22, 1963, lower right. Inscribed and titled in the print lower to the center. Xavier Gonzalez is known for Modernist figure, landscape, still-life easel and mural painting. He lived in Argentina and Mexico for some time, and was planning on becoming an engineer in a gold mine. In 1925, he immigrated to the United States. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1921 to 1923 and with his uncle, Jose Arpa. He also studied at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City, and in Paris and in the Far East. He was a teacher at Tulane University, Brooklyn Museum, Sul Ross State Teachers College, Case Western Reserve University and in New Orleans at Newcomb Memorial School of Art.
