1979 AMERICAN GREEK SERIGRAPH BY CHRYSSA SIGNED
Chryssa, Greek, American, 1933 to 2013, serigraph on paper, Times Square Fragment #2, 1979. Signed in pencil, lower right. Numbered 68 of 300 in pencil, lower left. Stamped, copyright D. T. Winstead, 1979, on the backside. Chryssa is recognized as one of the first artists to exploit neon as a medium for artistic expression. She is perhaps best known for her monumental installation, The Gates to Times Square, 1966, a brightly illuminated sculpture of text and symbols made from neon that visitors can walk through. Along with Dan Flavin, she helped to redefine neon, a vernacular advertising tool, as a venerated artistic medium. Challenging the ideas of formalism and abstract symbolism which prevailed in the early 1960s, sculptures such as Analysis of Letter Y 1965, created from neon tubing, plexiglass, and plastic evade interpretation and exude mystery. Vintage and Modern American and European Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
