Joseph Karl studied painting at the Vienna Academy of Art and began painting backdrops for opera, theater and political cabaret. When the Nazis invaded Vienna in 1938, he moved to Britain and worked as a set designer in the English, Italian, Belgian and Dutch theaters. Came to Israel for the first time in 1953 and settled there permanently in the early 1960s. Over the years, he has created many dozens of backdrops and costumes for various theaters. He also painted sets for the films "Hill 24 Doesn't Answer", "Saleh Shabati", "Sabina" and "Arbinka". Painted backdrops and costumes for forty plays at the Habima Theater.
