HaChalutz - the extreme Magazine that caused controversy among the Maskilim themselves - eight booklets

HaChalutz - The Pioneer, "Who Goes Before the People of Israel to the War of Religion and Resourcefulness" - an extreme Masskili periodical which provoked a dispute among the Masskilim themselves How far should one go in criticizing traditional Judaism. edited by Yehoshua Hashel Shur - eight booklets: 1 - 8. Lviv, Breslau, and Frankfurt am Main 1852-1869. Including the rare first booklet of which Dr. Mehlman writes that "almost all of it was destroyed" and then a second edition was printed.

The Hebrew periodical "HaHalutz" edited by Yehoshua Hashel Shur dealt with articles in the field of Israeli wisdom which included a brash and critical scholarly approach against Israel's tradition and the Jewish sources more than any of the periodicals that preceded it. On the cover in German appeared the title "Wissenschaftliche Abhandlungen über Jüdische Geschichte, Literatur, und Alterthumskunde" ("Scientific collection on history, literature and knowledge of the past of Judaism"). He was known as the most extreme in his criticism of Orthodoxy, against rabbis of his time and even against the moderate Maskilim themselves. Many scholars wrote a number of scathing essays against it, rejecting the things that appear in it. The publication of the journal was initiated by Shur and his friend, the writer Yitzhak Arter, who authored the article "History of the Pioneer" that appears in the first booklet and explains the intentions of the journal. Among the participants in the first volumes: Avraham Krochmel, Yitzhak Shmuel Reggio, Moshe Steinschneider, Avraham Geiger and others.
