Civitatis Orbis Terrarum. 4 v.
BRAUN (G.) & HOGENBERG (F.)
CIVITATES Orbis Terrarum. Coloniæ Agrippinæ: Apud Petrum à Brachel, 1572-1617.
4 v. [v.1, 2, 4 & 6]; 235 mapas [59, 59, 59, 58]: il.; 440 mm. Full contemporary vellum; not coloured plates; some foxing.
This four-volume set of the important city atlases published by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590) contains hundreds of panoramic views and maps of cities from around the world.
The son of Munich engravers, Franz Hogenberg engraved most of the engravings in Ortelius's Theatrum and most of the Civitates, and was probably responsible for initiating the project. Over 100 different artists and cartographers, the most important of whom was the Antwerp artist Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel (1542–1600), engraved the Civitates plates.
This set comprises volumes 1, from 1572, 10 ff. inums, 59 maps and 12 ff. inums; v. 2, undated, 8 ff. inums, 59 maps, 5 ff. inums; v. 4, 1617, 2 ff. inums, 59 maps and 8 ff. inums; and v. 6 also undated, 2 ff. inums, 58 maps and 4 ff. inums.; comprising a total of 235 of the 305 fold-out maps published, all uncolored and all in the Latin edition.
