AFONSO X
TERCEIRA Partida [Ptg.]

Superb fragment of the very important medieval work, the only known fragment in private hands.

This fragment, initially sold by a bookseller from Coimbra to Dr. Adelino Esteves Santos, was studied by Dr. Aida Fernanda Dias, about whom she wrote an article and transcribed what was possible in 2001. We transcribe here part of that article that describes the manuscript in detail:

«This is a parchment bifolio, measuring 454x282 mm, with the text distributed over two columns of 33 lines, on folio [1], and 34, on [2], a fragment of the Third Part that involves Title XVIII, laws 34. 46, which deal with letters and royal privileges, and also some small reinforcements that are difficult to identify, given their small size (35 x 25 and 29 x 22). Gothic script (21st century); capital letters in blue, green and red; headings in this last color; cauldrons in blue and red. The parchment served as the cover for a book by Veriacoens from 1623-1626 , as can be read in the cursive writing of the time, which someone wrote over the text of the Departure, with other difficult-to-read words that have not yet been fully deciphered. In three places, the dates 1623 and 1626 can be read; in the head: "Year of j624 [...] 62[8]". Underneath: u[incomprehensible' / on the cable. / Pages 72 and 73 [goes the ergaso]". Just below, the title of the above-mentioned book. Between the two columns of laws 36-39, written perpendicularly and in third-hand writing, 5 we read: " hhûa no that I left from Cape Sam Vicente [...]»
