Old Master, attributed to Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) The painter Van Dyck wrote "Nikolaus Cortener" at the top
Oil on canvas

Dimensions: 70 × 60 cm

This piece is believed to be among the artist’s final works, portraying Fra’ Nicolás Cotoner y de Oleza, Grand Master of the Order of Malta.

The painting depicts Fra’ Nicolás Cotoner y de Oleza (1608–1680), who served as the 61st Prince and Grand Master of the Order of Malta between 1663 and 1680. Born in Mallorca, Cotoner was a Knight of the Crown of Aragon and the younger brother of the previous Grand Master, Rafael Cotoner.

The portrait, attributed to Anthony van Dyck, presents the Grand Master in his ceremonial robes, richly adorned, with a wide collar and expressive facial features, reflected through the delicate treatment of light and shadow.
These characteristics are typical of Van Dyck’s portrait technique, particularly in his works for the royal courts and nobility of the era.

Provenance: Acquired in 1975 from a private estate sale in Bordeaux, France.
