AN ILYA SHENKER LITHOGRAPH BALLET SERIES THE RITE OF SPRING
A series of 8 silkscreen-lithographs that are signed and numbered by artist Ilya Shenker. The gift was donated by Sandra Genter to the Jerome Robbins Dance Division possibly in 2013. The lithograph depicts a scene from "The Rite of Spring: Pictures from Pagan Russia in Two Parts" ballet, composed by Igor Stravinsky and premiered in 1913 in the Theatre of Champs-Elysees in Paris. This ballet was considered a breakthrough into a more modern and contemporary approach towards classic ballet. The premiere of this ballet was scandalous for the the audience, provoking pro and con opinions about the performance for the cues on which the dancers danced and the overall "barbaric rhythms", brutality, and dissonance at the time. Signed bottom right, 78/150
Dimensions: 19 5/16 x 14 9/16 in., (49 x 37 cm.)
