At the beginning of the book, an inscription: "Belongs to the Chevra Kadisha here in Erlau…"
An inscription on the first page: "In memory of … Rabbi Shimon Sofer son of Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Av Beit Din here" – Rabbi Shimon Sofer, author of Hitorerut Tshuva, the last rabbi of Erlau before the Holocaust. Then, the name of his son, Rabbi Moshe Dayan of Erlau, appears.
Rabbi Shimon Sofer, the son of the Ketav Sofer. In 1881, he became the rabbi of Erlau, Hungary and held the position, as well as the position of Rosh Yeshiva, for sixty four years! Authored the "Hitorerut Tshuva" Responsa. The books were published anonymously and at the beginning of each page it was written: "These teachings should not be depended on at all". He was murdered in Auschwitz with his son Rabbi Moshe and their families.
The only descendant who had survived the Holocaust was the son and grandson Rabbi Yochanan Sofer. He returned to Erlau and rebuilt the Jewish community and its institutions. He also rebuilt the yeshiva. The notebook is from those years.
In 1950, he immigrated to the Land of Israel and founded the Erlau Yeshiva.

It is most likely that the notebook had also contained the names of the members of the Erlau community who had died after the war and had been buried by the Chevra Kadisha founded by the Rabbi of Erlau.
The Protocols of Jewish Life in Erlau during those years
At the beginning of the notebook, 12 written leaves in Hebrew, some of them written on both their sides.
At the end of the notebook, 5 leaves written on both their sides in Hungarian with signatures. These are protocols of meetings of the community that were held during the years 1948-1949, including financial accounts and decisions that had been reached during the meetings. Each protocol is signed by the same three leaders of the community. Rabbi Schick is mentioned, without his surname. This might be Rabbi Nathan Schick who later served as the rabbi of the Kollel of the orthodox communities of Hungary. The protocols also contain detailed plans for purchasing a building for the school of the community.
