About 450 printed items concerning British Jewry. 19th through 20th century.
An extensive collection of printed items reflecting the diverse cultural and religious activities of the Jewish community in Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection includes books, booklets and other printed items concerning many aspects of congregational life and world events.
The collection includes: * Documents concerning current events, starting with internal matters of synagogues, schools and congregations and ending with Jewish culture, Jewish education, assistance to refugees and Zionism. * Letters concerning various issues, including assistance to European refugees and actions to save European Jews during World War II. * Many books printed in Britain: holy books and Jewish philosophy books, prayer books for various occasions, for women, soldiers and children and books concerning different matters on the agenda of world Jewry (such as shechita and the struggle regarding the proposal for a simple world calendar), study books (the earliest was printed in 1808), prose, poetry, eulogies, biographies, books documenting various events, compositions about British Jewry, and more. * Other printed items on different subjects: catalogue of an exhibition in Sha'ar HaShamayim synagogue, educational illustrated and photographed posters about Jewish holidays and towns if Israel to be hung in Jewish schools, a blank Ketubah, divorce certificates issued in London in 1917 and in 1923, caricature of Reuven Sassoon (son of David Sassoon) from "Vanity Fair", issues of newspapers for Jewish children who were evacuated to rural areas during World War II, an issue of "Young Jewry", a periodical for children, and more. * Reports, proposals and other publications regarding Jewish education in Britain, numerous reports issued by different Jewish committees, and other items.
Total of about 450 items, including about 145 leaves, letters, postcards, invitations and more, and about 305 books and brochures. Size and condition vary.
