Shalom Moskowitz – " Zeigermacher of Safed" (1896-1980) – Printed Tiles
16 printed tiles with paintings by Shalom Moskowitz, the " Zeigermacher of Safed" (1896-1980). Israel, [1970s].
The tiles (made by "Negev"), framed in wooden frames, depict urban and rural views, people and animals – all in the naïve style of Moskowitz. Among the tiles – three pairs of identical tiles framed in double frames – two identical tiles in a frame. The label:"Shalom Israeli tiles, Doron NY. Made in Israel, 1974" appears on some of the frames.
Shalom Moskowitz (1896-1980), born in Safed, worked as a watch-maker and signs painter until his workshop was destroyed during the Independence War; he started to paint relatively late in a naïve style, and focused on biblical themes. Encouraged by the painter Yosl Bergner he made painting his main occupation. His knowledge of the sources and rich imagination led to the figurative paintings of biblical stories; naivety and humor are interrelated in his works.
Tiles: 15X15 cm. Frames: 21.5X22 cm. Double frames: 36.5X21 cm. Good condition. Some stains on the tiles. Slight fractures to margins of some of the tiles. Some frames are defected and partially broken. One tile is detached from frame.
