Photograph and envelopes with special stamps, in honor of Israel joining the UN. Israel and the USA, May 11-12, 1949.
1. A large photograph depicting the Israeli delegation to the UN (headed by Abba Eban) on the day Israel joined the UN. Photographer: Leo Rosenthal. 19X24 cm. Good condition. Creases. Tears along edges, reinforced with tape.
2. Souvenir envelope, in honor of Israel joining the UN. New York, May 11, 1949.
8.5X13.5 cm. Good condition. Minor blemishes.
3-12. Ten envelopes that were sent in the Israeli mail and bear a special postmark in honor of Israel joining the UN, from May 12, 1949 – "Israel – a member of the United Nations" (Hebrew), which depicts both the flag of Israel and the emblem of the UN. Size varies. Fair to good condition.
On May 11, 1949, the United Nations General Assembly approved, by a majority of two thirds, the request to let Israel join the UN, this after it was denied by the United Nations Security Council several times during 1948-1949.
