Maurice Hagemans, Cows at the Lake
Spring landscape with cows drinking on the overgrown shore of a lake and farmer's wife in the background, idyllic scenery under a loosely clouded sky, mixed media (pastel, opaque colours and watercolour), late 19th c., signed "MHagemans" at lower left, somewhat stained and soiled, behind glass in a stuccoed and gold-bronzed frame (somewhat bumped), folding dimensions approx. 68.5 x 87.5 cm. Artist's info: Belgian painter and watercolourist (1852 Liège to 1917 Ixelles/Elsene), scion of a banking family, from 1873 self-taught occupation with painting, 1874 acquaintance with Félicien Rops, settled in Anseremme in the province of Namur, here friendship with Périclès Pantazis, went to Brussels and became a member of the group "Cercle des Aquarellistes et des Aquafortistes Belges" and "Les Hydrophiles", several journeys to Scandinavia and Germany, from 1886 resident in Ixelles, his son Paul Hagemans also became a painter, among others participation in exhibitions at the Münster Museum.Among other things, he took part in the exhibitions in the Munich Glaspalast between 1890-99, source: Thieme-Becker and Wikipedia.
