Gentlemen discussing at a table over a glass of champagne, charcoal and white chalk on paper, inscribed, dated and signed lower left "München (18)99 M. Stern", framed under mount and behind glass, mount approx. 35,5 x 43,5 cm. Artist info: GermanJewish painter, draughtsman and graphic artist (1872 Düsseldorf to 1943 Düsseldorf), studied 1888-92 at the academy of arts in Düsseldorf under Hugo Crola, Heinrich Lauenstein, Adolf Schill, Peter Janssen and Eduard von Gebhardt, 1892-94 further education in Munich among others 1893 under Carl von Marr, 1894-95 military service, 1995 study visit of several months in Venice, later regular study trips to Italy, Holland (Amsterdam, Katwijk), Belgium, Switzerland, Alsace-Lorraine and France (Paris), from 1893 member of the Munich Secession, whose exhibitions he attended, from 1910 contact with the art dealer and collector Alfred Flechtheim, 1914-18 as a non-commissioned officer in the First World War.
