The publication was supposed to be issued in 15 volumes, 10 of which were to be devoted to the world history of Jews, and 5 - to the history of Jews on the territories of the Russian Empire, but the publication was interrupted due to the outbreak of World War I. Only volumes 1 and 11 were published before the October Revolution. In this fundamental edition it was planned to collect the works on the history of Jews by the major Russian and European historians, specializing in Jewish studies. V. 1 was based on a considerably abridged and revised work by the German historian R. Kittel "The History of the Peoples of Israel" (1909-1912), which dealt with the history of the peoples of Palestine and Israel from ancient times to the fall of the kingdom of Judah under the onslaught of the troops of Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar in 588 B.C.
