Flicker, Kevin - stoneware, good condition,
Square handbuilt stoneware jar by Minesota artist, Kevin Flicker is 7.5" tall by 3" square. Flicker a fourth generation Minnesotan who was born in St. Cloud and grew up in Rochester. In the spring of 1974 he graduated from the University of Minnesota, Morris, with degrees in Psychology and English. Later that fall he became enamored with clay after he enrolled in a university night course and witnessed his first ceramics teacher throw on the potter’s wheel. Over the next ten years he developed a personal clay aesthetic via numerous ceramics courses and workshops from a variety of teachers. His most influential training was a rigorous apprenticeship served with Master Potter Richard Bresnahan at St. John’s University in 1985. He then taught ceramics courses at UMM from 1987 until his retirement in 2017. As a teacher he was committed to a standard of excellence that led many of his students to continue their studies after UMM in graduate, apprenticeship, or residency programs.
While Kevin has exhibited his work throughout the Midwest and beyond, he is primarily interested in producing affordable, high quality functional pots for the local population, using as many locally gathered natural materials as possible. In 2001 he was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Minnesota’s College of Continuing Education. In the summer of 2003, along with a group of current and former UMM students, he built UMM’s first woodfired kiln capable of firing stoneware and porcelain. The kiln was built almost exclusively with donated or recycled materials, and to date has been fired 18 times.
Kevin lives in Morris with his wife Judy in a Craftsman-style timber framed home that he built himself using numerous recycled materials. He continues to create hand-built vessels in a small basement workshop.
