Anders Zorn (Swedish, 1860-1920) was an internationally renowned artist, finding success as a painter, sculptor, and etching artist. His portraiture was extensive, covering a range of subjects from the social elite, such as U.S. Presidents Grover Cleveland, William H. Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt, to farmers. His nude portraits of young, unmarried women from Dalarna gave rise to the terms "Zornkulla" or "dalkulla" to describe them. The present lots represent a range of etchings executed throughout his life from 1884-1919, most coming from a single collection.

Anders Zorn "Paul Verlaine" Etching 1895
Anders Zorn (Swedish, 1860-1920). Etching on paper titled "Paul Verlaine" either version I or II depicting the top half of the French poet, Paul Marie Verlaine, 1895. According to Asplund, this is a 2nd state printing. Pencil signed along the lower right. Signed and dated in plate along the lower left.

Loys Delteil, "Anders Zorn" (Le Peintre-Graveur Illustre, Paris, 1909), plate 93.

Asplund's book has three states written for this print, while Delteil has two states listed. The print's 2nd state is pictured in Delteil's book while Asplund has the 3rd state, but neither visually correspond with this listing. Since Delteil's book only lists two states, it can be deduced that it is older and was published without the knowledge of a third state existing. Visually, this etching appears to be an in between unknown state that is not written in Asplund or Delteil. According to Asplund's written states, this etching could be a possible 4th state that occurred in between the 2nd and 3rd states. Delteil displays "Paul Verlaine I" in its 2nd state that visually matches this etching but does not correspond to Asplund's version of 2nd state "Paul Verlaine I."
