One-Of-A-Kind Binding! Sefer Nevi’im Acharonim, Amsterdam 1754. Bound In Magnificent Original Dutch Binding

Sefer Nevi’im Acharonim with Magishei Mincha commentary, Amsterdam 1754. A charming, magnificent copy, bound its original Dutch binding with spectacular gilt detail, with all page edges in full gilt.

On the title page is the ownership inscription of Moshe Shlomo Zalman son of R. Anshel Keyser, who descended from a long line of Parnasim in Amsterdam. He ultimately moved to London where he worked as a scribe, and produced masterful illustrated manuscripts which are known for their beauty. He was also very much involved in the communal affairs in London, where he served as one of the heads of the Jewish community. In 1864, he published a small Siddur based on the manuscript of R. Tzvi Hirsch Berlin, entitled “Seder L’Chinuch Habayis”.

In all probability, this unique binding was commissioned specially for him, considering his immense wealth. To the best of our knowledge, not only is this binding not found on any other Hebrew book printed in Amsterdam, it is also the most magnificent and detailed binding ever seen on a Hebrew book from this period. Truly one-of-a-kind!

An inscription (probaby from the previous owner) is seen on the inner flyleaf: “Rare Jewish Dutch Binding”.

Provenance: Ralph Yablon Collection, Bloomsbury Auctions, London 1985, Lot 29. In addition to amassing a spectacular collection of hundreds of rare Hebrew books and manuscripts, Ralph Yablon was instrumental in recusing over 1,500 Torah scrolls from war-torn Europe and donated them to the Westminster Synagogue in London. They are held by the Memorial Scrolls Trust and displayed in London’s Czech Memorial Scroll Museum, where they have been on permanent exhibition since 1988.

In very good condition, spine expertly rebacked. All edges gilt. With a separate title page for Sefer Yirmiyah.

Page size: Approx. 17.5cm.
[1], 179, [1], 181-316 pp.
