תקציר
The later edition includes an introduction by Erhard Roy Wiehn (pp. vii-xiv) and a preface in English by Howard L. Adelson (pp. xvii-xxii), as well as supplementary material (pp. 543-559). Kaufmann (1896-1984) relates his own personal story and that of the Riga ghetto, including the decimation of the ghetto by successive massacres, in which the author's family also perished, and in which Latvian militia played a leading role
everyday life
the problematic relations with the German Jews housed in a separate part of the ghetto
the labor details
German and Jewish functionaries
and an aborted attempt to organize resistance. also relates briefly the story of the extermination of other Jewish communities in Latvia. Describes Kaiserwald, in which the author was interned, and other Latvian camps. With the approach of the Soviet army, the inmates were evacuated to Stutthof
from there Kaufmann was sent to a labor camp at Magdeburg, a satellite of Buchenwald
and finally on a death march to Sachsenhausen and beyond, until he was liberated. The author says nothing about his background
he seems to have been a person of some influence in the community because he was appointed head of various workshops both in the ghettos and the camps and later was active in the DP camp and a founder of the organization of Latvian Holocaust survivors. Pp. 533-538 contain an English translation of the author's epilogue. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism)
