PLEKHANOV GEORGI: (1856-1918) Russian Revolutionary. A Marxist Theoretician and Founder of the social-democratic party in Russia. An interesting A.L.S., Georges Plékhanoff, six pages, 8vo, 6th March 1907, in French. A lengthy letter of good content, about Religion, and Evolution of modern civilization, Plekhanov stating `You ask me: Are we living a time of dissolution or evolution of the religious thoughts and belief?´ further responding in a long philosophical and at times scientific explanation, saying `..Let me formulate the following question, and in this precise way, ''isn´t it true that the dissolution of the religious thoughts is the necessary end because of its own evolution?.... The alliance between religion and moral, which always seemed to be indivisible, is now condemned to disappearance because of the Human being progress... The spirituality that explains every phenomenon to a wild and illiterate person, doesn´t explain anything to Berthelot. The religious value decrease the more men are civilised, and this is the result of the scientific progress
.. The Humanity progress brings with the death of the religious belief
I insist, the moral can have its own independent existence.´ and concludes with `The today´s date religions in civilised countries are most of them at the back and behind the moral progress of their populations. W.R Clifford was right when saying ''if men were not better than their religions, the world would be hell.!''´ A letter of good content. With blank integral leaf. Extremely small age wear. G £600-900 Marcellin Berthelot (1827-1907) French Chemist and Historian.
