An envelope that survived the EL-AL plane shot down in Bulgaria
An envelope that survived a EL-AL plane that was shot down in Bulgaria, has a rare post stamp on it.
By the stamp written- "this post survived in a EL-AL plain that was shot down in Bulgaria 27.7.5"
The letter was send from Holland to Holon.
El Al Flight 402 was an international passenger flight from London to Tel Aviv. On July 27, 1955, the flight, operated by a Lockheed Constellation registered as 4X-AKC, strayed into Bulgarian airspace and was shot down by two Bulgarian MiG-15 jet fighters and crashed near Petrich, Bulgaria. All 7 crew and 51 passengers on board the airliner were killed. The crash took place amid highly strained relations between the Eastern Bloc and the West and was the deadliest involving the Constellation at the time.
No one knows up to today how much post was on that plain but one bag survived and the letters (burnt or turn) where passed over to the Israel post service to be documented and signed "this post survived in a EL-AL plain that was shot down in Bulgaria 27.7.5"
