A rare Judaica collection item from an Islamic country. A Jewish ''Sofer stam" case "David Cohen" (Qalamdan) with his tools. Qajar Period, Persia.
An antique Persian Kalamdan with the writing tools inside. The item belonged to David Cohen A Sofer Stam (Scribe)- End of the 19th century
The full name and the initials of David Cohen are engraved on the inner bottom and outer bottom of the piece.
The Kalamdan (Divit)  is illustrated by an artist without depicting people or faces. ( non figurative ) Due to the Jewish prohibition of the having figurative images on items.
This design characterizes the Persian tradition. In the later generations we see that the Persians started using figurative art due to influence of European Christian art.

In the Qalamdan there are most of the original writing implements, This is rare to find. The item is made from paper mache and lacquered in order to protect the painting and give it extra shine.

These Qalamdans came to the peak of their excellence in Persia during the end of the 19th century.
