Letter by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Gershonowitz – Regarding the Wedding of his Daughter with Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz
A long interesting letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Gershonowitz, head of the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva. Bnei Brak, Kislev 1939. Written to the managers of the Ezrat Torah fund in the US, with a request for help "to have compassion for him and on his family who are really suffering from hunger", due to the financial state of the yeshiva, and his low salary. He also requests aid in marrying his daughter: "And now I have made a match for my daughter with a very excellent young man of the Hebron Yeshiva, he is really one of the best there, and the time has come for them to get married, but to my sorrow, I cannot conclude the matter…", due to his difficult financial state. In the letter, he also writes of his past and of his appointment as head of the Tiferet Yeshiva according to the "approbation of the author of the Chazon Ish". Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Gershonowitz (1888-1954), Rabbi of Zavinka in the Brisk region (Poland-Lithuania), in the autumn of 1935 ascended to Eretz Israel and was appointed head of the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. The match and engagement of his daughter Chava Esther with Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz took place in mid-1939 [by the advice of the Chazon Ish], but the wedding was held only in the month of Iyar 1940, on Lag BaOmer. His son-in-law Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz (1913-2011), was born in Volozhin, studied at the Rameiles Yeshiva in Vilna by Rabbi Shlomo Heiman and ascended to Eretz Israel in 1935 and studied at the Hebron Yeshiva in Jerusalem. After his marriage, he began teaching at the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva [at that time he was supported by the Kollel in Petach Tikva where he studied]. After a while, he was appointed head of the yeshiva for younger boys (high-school age) of the Ponovezh Yeshiva, a position he held for almost 70 years. He was renowned as one of the leading heads of yeshivas and Torah scholar in recent times. Official stationery, of the Tiferet Zion Yeshiva. 29 cm. Good-fair condition, minor tears.
