Robert Capa – Three Photographs of General David Marcus
Robert Capa, 3 photographs featuring General David (Mickey) Marcus, [1948].
Capa (1913-1954) – American photographer of Jewish-Hungarian descent. Arrived in Israel in 1948 where he documented the War of Independence and the State Proclamation ceremony. Considered the most famous war photographer of the 20th century, experiencing five different wars.
Marcus (1902-1948) – The IDF’s first general. He came to Israel during the War of Independence as a member of Machal to contribute his military experience as a colonel in the US army. Marcus was killed hours before the beginning of the first cease-fire, accidentally shot to death by an IDF sentry.
The verso of one photograph is hand-signed by Robert Capa, with a pen and ink-stamped “Photograph by PM” and a pencil description stating “Marcus”, apparently in Capa’s handwriting; another photo bears the same ink-stamp on the back and a pencil description as mentioned above; the third photograph is neither signed nor described. 20.5x25cm. Good condition, few stains and wrinkles. Two photographs are staple-marked.
