noa ironic

The thesis to my work is based on my frustration of viewing people viewing art, specifically painting. It seemed like every exhibition was characterized by a scan like movement of the audience, casually walking by the art like a check list. This experience drove me to try and find a different flow of visitors in the space, one less depressing.
In my last show I created a painting installation that allowed people to view the painting via a maze of painted objects and painted walls.
It is my hope for the future to keep pushing the boundaries of the medium, creating an engaging experience, to be surrounded by images and colors that moves the viewer around like a dance.
Another observation from my study of people viewing art – taking a photo of yourself with art may be more important than the work itself. Hens I tried creating art that is made to be photographed, an interactive wooden cut out painting of a horse getting peed on, and you can be the rider. At first, I thought the content of the painting would bother most people but it seemed like most visitors enjoyed playing with the art. I believe the playfulness and inviting nature of the works I produced truly engaged the audience, even though the works matter was ironic and grotesque it seemed to spark joy in people, with an after-taste of ‘oh shit that’s actually quite depressing’.
My paintings are figurative, based on drawings and sketches I create constantly. The scenes I choose to paint are dramatic and painful but also funny and colorful, a confusing and emotional representation of inner world.
All these things I wrote about the future of painting, engaging art and emotional depth are great and all, but truly I just have a joy of painting and I want to share with the world or at least die trying.
