BARTOK BELA: (1881 - 1945) Hungarian Composer. A very interesting A.L.S., Bartok Bela, to the front ...
BARTOK BELA: (1881 - 1945) Hungarian Composer. A very interesting A.L.S., Bartok Bela, to the front of a postcard, one page, dated in his hand, Manchester, 23rd February 1904, to Gardony, in Czech. Bartok, in his small writing, and upside down, refers to his first musical performances of Kossuth, and states in part `…It looks like my sonate has been more appreciated by the public in Vienna than in Pest. There is a big silence from critics..´ further saying `As a pianist, I have had a great success here, and I only got positive critics. But on the other hand they find plenty of defaults with Kossuth, although they admit that it is a special composition.. I will leave and go to London where I will stay few days, and further to Berlin for two months..´ Postmarked and post-stamped to verso, with addressee in Bartok´s hand. To the front the postcard shows an image of the Manchester Town Hall. Very small overall minor age wear, otherwise G £2500-3500 Kossuth (1904) is a symphonic poem by Bartok, composed as a tribute to Hungarian politician and hero of the revolution Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894). Premiered in Budapest on 13th January 1904. It was performed a month later in Manchester, the 18th February 1904, under the direction of conductor Hans Richter (1843-1916). Kossuth was Bartok´s first important orchestral work.
