“Saint Augustine". Carved, gilded and polychromed sculpture. Romanesque. Late 12th century - early 13th century.
Height: 73 cm.
The saint is presented in a forward-facing position, as a bishop wearing episcopal vestments and a mitre on his head, and in an attitude of giving blessing. The magnificent quality of the polychroming of the skin tones and very richly chromatic vestments is outstanding. It is also worth mentioning the undoubtable mastery of the sculptor, which is very obvious in the treatment of the folds and the complicated sides of the clothing, and especially in the magnificent face of the saint with its fine features and curly beard. The saint’s face conveys a severe expression. The sculptor manages to transmit great spirituality in this way. This is most certainly a masterpiece of medieval imagery.
