Sha’ar HaKavanot was authored by the saintly Kabbalistic sage, Rabbi Chaim Vital, considered one of the foremost Kabbalah masters of Safed. He was the primary disciple of the holy Arizal.

This is a copy of the first section of Sha’ar HaKavanot, as was edited and formatted by Rabbi Shmuel Vital. This section delves in great detail into the thoughts and focus of the weekday prayers.

The manuscript’s owner wrote on the first leaf:

“I purchased the eight She’arim of the Ari on the 8th day of the month of Sivan, 5429. I accepted upon myself not to receive any monetary gain from them; not to sell or pawn them or use them to pay any debt. Furthermore, my children and I shall use them exclusively for study. May G-d grant me, my children and my grandchildren the merit to study them. Amen, may it be His will. Abraham…Aderi.”

The scribe copied Rabbi Chaim Vital’s composition in clear and orderly western script, early 18th century.

This copy includes numerous scholarly glosses and interesting signatures.
