This responsa publication enlightens us as to ancient, lesser-known customs.
The front of the manuscript bears the stamp of its earlier owner: Harav Chaim Shmuel Neiman, a Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim in New York.
Rabbi Yosef ben Rabbi Menachem Steinhart, Chief Rabbi of Fürth, was born circa 1720, and died in 1776. From his youth, his proficiency in Gemara and Poskim was well known, and as he matured he became a widely known outstanding Halachic authority, receiving questions from all over Europe.
Rabbi Steinhart lived in the same generation as the Gra. one can detect seeds of opposition to Chassidut in his writings.
