Sefer HaMinhagim. Miniature, Illustrated Edition. Amsterdam, 1724.
An Extremely Rare and Important Book!
Sefer HaMinhagim on the order of the creation of the world. The order of Brachot for the entire year with 15 magnificent woodcut illustrations.
These type of Minhagim Books were once in regular use. With the passage of time they became defunct, hence they are now exceedingly rare.
Includes blessings according to the annual cycle: Havdalah, Shabbat candle-lighting, Kiddush, Grace after meals, Birkat HaNehenin, Eiruvei Chatzerot, Sefirat HaOmer, Shofar, Lulav, Chanukah, Purim, Circumcision, Marriage, the Passover Seder including the Haggadah, Pidyon HaBen, Deathbed Confession, Tziduk HaDin, Kriyat Shema.
Guidelines are in Hebrew, apart from the Passover Haggadah directives, which appear in Spanish in Hebrew letters.
The most impressive, high-quality illustrations have a dimension of approximately half a page.
This is a small-format edition in contrast to the previous, relatively rare, larger 1722 edition. They both feature the same illustrations.
The printer Isaac Chizkiyahu son of Jacob de Cordova was a scion of a Spanish Family of Printers. His father was born in Brazil and upon arriving in Amsterdam studied the printing trade. Jacob Chaim was employed in a number of printing houses before opening his own press circa 1706 where he printed Hebrew and Spanish books. In 1709 Jacob transferred his press to Hamburg where he printed 6 compositions before returning his operations to Amsterdam around 1714. He remained in the printing trade until 1730, printing and selling books, occasionally also publishing in Yiddish.
Amsterdam, 1724. Isaac son of Jacob Chaim de Cordova Press.
52 leaves. 12.5 cm. Good condition. Antique, parchment binding.
A most rare, miniature edition of Sefer HaMinhagim, likely never appeared in Public Auctions!
