Rabbi Meir Shapira (1887-1933) was famed from his youth for his brilliance and was referred to as the Genius of Shatz. He served as Rabbi of a number of towns including Galina, Sanok, Petrakov and finally in Lublin. He was one of the most influential Rabbinical figures of Pre-war Poland.
Rabbi Shapira founded Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin which became a flagship institution in Poland. At the momentous Knessiah gathering, Rabbi Shapiro launched the ‘Daf Yomi’ initiative, which myriads of Jews around the world participate in today. As part of his fundraising efforts to establish Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin, Rabbi Shapiro travelled to the United States. He was most active in Agudat Yisrael of Poland, and at the behest of the Admor of Gur, he served in the Polish Parliament representing his brethren, and was greatly respected by the leading Torah luminaries.
