Noheg KaTzon Yosef. Hanau, 1717. Unique Copy With Dedication on Binding to Dayan Rabbi Kosman Segal. First Edition.
Noheg KaTzon Yosef comprises Ashkenazi customs and laws and customs of Frankfurt. Authored by Rabbi Yosef Yuspa HaLevi Segal. This composition is based on the book, Yosef Ometz by the author’s grandfather, Rabbi Yuspa Han Norlingen a Chief Dayan Frankfurt am Mein.
This composition includes interesting customs connected to prayers, Kri’at HaTorah and others. Includes a song for Chanuka and poem on the occasion of donating a Sefer Torah to a Shul.
Particularly magnificent copy, likely specifically requested by the author. Includes leather-covered wood binding, with embossed dedication on the front cover:
“This is gifted to to one whose home is open to all h”h my master and relative who is a true Torah scholar and Rabbi…outstanding both in spiritual and material matters, the outstanding Dayan and Ram…Rabbi Kosman Segal nr”v”.
The book’s recipient was likely Rabbi Moshe Kosman Essa son of Rabbi Yehuda Lima HaLevi, Dayan of Nikolsburg.
The author’s father’s name was similarly, Rabbi Moshe Kosman of Essa, as is signed on the preface as well as on the title page.
The connection of these two individuals who shared the same name is unknown.
The title page features a signature: “HaK’ Kosman Abeles.
On the back endpaper appears an ownership listing: “This book belongs to the distinguished and lofty famed philanthropist khr”r Wolf Abeles of Alt-Ofen.”.
[2] leaves at the end of the book contain the leaflet ‘Tzon HaNachalot’. Following the book’s printing a controversy arose regarding some of the laws and customs it included. The two leaves were appended to the book post-printing. They were authored by Rabbi Yehudah Mehler of Bingen, the author’s father- in-law. It includes corrections to the contended customs.
These leaves are only found in some copies.
Hanau, 1717. First edition.
[3], 89, [2] leaves. Approx. 20 cm. Quality paper. Very good condition. Light worming. Original wood-leather binding, with remnants of clasps. Tears and damage to binding.
Complete and magnificent pedigree copy of a Sefer Yedod of the original Frankfurt am Mein-Ashkenaz customs. Includes the leaves of booklet that was appended post-printing. These do not appear in most copies.
