Autographed Responsa on the Talmud. Penned in the Holy Handwriting of the Chatam Sofer’s Leading Disciple, Rabbi Avraham Sha’ag-Zwebner, Av Beit Din Kobersdorf.
Complete autographed volume containing 297 pages; all penned in the holy handwriting of the famed Gaon Rabbi Avraham Sha’ag-Zwebner, Av Beit Din Kobersdorf, and leading disciple of the Chatam Sofer.
The manuscript is a complete composition of in-depth novellae on a range of Talmudic tractates including Yumah, Chullin, Kidushin, Ketubot and Menachot.
This composition was apparently prepared by the author for publishing, as indicated by the index that appears on 291-294. This handwritten index presents the novellae arranged according to Sugyot and Masechtot, Masechtot pages and the book’s pages. The index is written in exceptionally clear and beautiful square script. We have not ascertained whether these novellae were published.
The endpaper and last page feature ownership listings penned by the author’s grandson, Rabbi Ahron Zwebner. He attests that this manuscript belonged to his father, Rabbi Yehudah Leib Zwebner, the author’s son.
Rabbi Avraham Sha’ag-Zwebner (1801-1873) was a prized pupil of the Chatam Sofer and received Rabbinical ordination from him. The Chatam Sofer’s son-in-law, Rabbi Zalman Shpitzer, was effusive in his praise of Rabbi Avraham. He declared him to be literally a Sefer Torah and fully proficient in Talmud Bavli and Yerushalmi with all commentaries. He attests to the Chatam Sofer’s great love and esteem towards Rabbi Avraham.
In 1827 Rabbi Avraham was appointed Av Beit Din of Schaltmannsdorf, and in 1852 as Av Beit Din of Kobersdorf. He similarly stood at the helm of the Yeshivot in the locations that he served on the Rabbinate, nurturing numerous disciples. In 1873 he immigrated to the Holy Land together with his famed close pupil, Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Rabbi Avraham lived there until he passed away.
297 pages. 24 cm. Good condition. Worn and slightly detached binding.
This is the largest manuscript ever of Rabbi Avraham Sha’ag Zwebner to appear in a sale!
