Yam Shel Shlomo. Copy Belonging to The Gaon, The Chavot Yair. Prague, 1616. First Edition. Sefer Yesod!
The is the famed and fundamental composition of The MaHarshal, comprised of his novellae on Masechet Bava Kamah.

Printed with the endorsements of The Shelah HaKadosh, Rabbi Yeshaya HaLevi Horowitz, and The Kli Yakar, Rabbi Ephraim Luntschitz.

At the end of the book appears an additional declaration of The Shelah, The Kli Yakar and The Tosafos Yom Tov forbidding unauthorized reprinting of the book.

The MaHarshal authored his work, Yam Shel Shlomo as a summary of Halachic rulings, ordered according to the tractates of the Talmud. The Maharshal opposed the codification approach adopted by his cousin, The Rema. He authored this work as an in-depth approach to Talmud study. It is based on arriving at Halachic conclusions, only after thorough study of all sources.

The title page features ownership listings and a handwritten signature of “Shmuel b”r Yoel”. Adjacent to this is a handwritten signature of the “Chavot Yair”: “Yair Chaim Bacharach I purchased it from the one who signed.”

Additional ownership listings and various notations also appear on the endpaper.

Rabbi Shimon Yair Chaim Bacharach (1638-1702) is often referred to as The Chavot Yair after his prominent composition of responsa. He served as Rabbi of Koblenz and Mainz. In his final years, Rabbi Bacharach stood at the helm of the Worms community. He was one of Germany’s most prominent Rabbinical figures.
