Kol Bo. Sefer Yesod. Rimini, Circa 1525. Wonderful Copy
A prominent Halacha and customs book. Comprises about 150 simanim regarding laws and customs on the topics of brachot, tefillot, customs of Shabbat and Holiday, marriage, fiscal laws, Issur VeHeter and customs of mourning. The book also includes one of the earliest elucidations on the Passover Haggadah.
Kol Bo was first printed in Naples, Italy, circa 1489. This edition was published from a different manuscript that Gershom Soncino had, unconnected to the Naples printing.
This is one of a total of only ten books that were printed in Rimini.
This book, from the era of the Rishonim, was printed anonymously. There are various speculations as to the author’s identity. Some surmise this in an abridged version of Orchot Chaim by Rabbi Aharon HaKohen of Lunel, due to the similarities of the two works. It is unknown, however, which of these was written earlier.
Kol Bo often quotes the words of The Rif, Rabbi Yitzchak - author of Ohr Zaru’a, the Rosh and Rashi. Kol Bo was widely accepted as a fundamental Halachic work, and is often quoted by the Rishonim, the Beit Yosef and Gedolei HaAcharonim.
The title page features the printer’s mark: A tower with a border around it along with verses. Gersom Soncino began using this mark, from the Rimini editions and onwards.
Rimini, circa 1525. Gershom Soncino.
