Unique Silver Havdalah Candle-Holder. Made by the Artist Moshe Zabari. New York 1978. Signed

Unique and Rare modern Judaica item.

Havdalah candle-holder made by the artist Moshe Zabari when he was artist-in-residence at the Jewish Museum of New York. Zabari was invited to the Jewish Museum in 1961, several years after graduating from the Bezalel Academy (1955-1958).

The upper part of this item was made using a silver-sawing technique with which Zabari created images of flames. Between the apertures, the actual flickering flame can be seen. For the design of the lower part, Zabari used the motif that repeated itself in his works from this time, a cluster of holes on which he mounted the silver Hebrew letters forming the words Orah Vesimcha (light and joy) - from the Havdalah text "ליהודים היתה אורה ושמחה וששון ויקר".

An interesting and unique design made by Zabari when he worked at the Tobe Pascher Workshop for Modern Jewish Art in New York in 1978. An identical work is exibited at the Jewish Museum of New York.

Moshe Zabari: an Israeli Judaica artist, born in 1935 in Jerusalem.
Studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design during the years 1955-1958.
In his work, Zabari combines modern art and traditional Jewish art, while ensuring his items are also functional. Zabari also incorporates elements of biblical commentary, especially in his sculptures.
