'Jewish Pawnbroker' by Leopold Burger (1861-1903). Vienna-Austria, 19th Century
Quality painting using the technique of oil paint on wood by the Austrian artist Leopold Burger.
Secene of a Jewish pawnbroker sitting in his meager room, his goods scattered around him .
On the lower part of the painting, the artist captioned the scene and signed his name.
The painter Leopold Burger studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, initially painting scenes from Viennese street life (such as arrests, milk gossip, Reichsrat elections, and more). He created a wall frieze and ceiling paintings for the Basburg Café and won second place for his designs for the artistic decoration of the German People's Theater (1888). Later, Burger turned to decorative painting. In 1891, he became a member of the Künstlerhaus. Awards: Bronze Medal in 1898 in Paris, Imperial Prize in 1900 (for the painting The Suffering), and a small gold medal from the state.
