Ludwig Blum was born in the town of Líšeň, near Brno in Moravia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (later Czechoslovakia). Between 1910 and 1912, he studied painting in Vienna under the painter David Cohen. From 1913 to 1918, he was drafted and fought in WWI in the Austro-Hungarian army. After the war, from 1919 to 1920, he studied at the Academy of Art in Prague and was active in the Maccabi organization. During the years 1921–1923, he undertook study trips to London, Spain, Italy, Paris, and Amsterdam. Finally, in 1923, he immigrated to Israel and settled in Jerusalem.
