Impressive, Gilded Silver Tallit Bag. Algeria, 1946
Rare and valuable museum piece. There are two additional and only exemplars of a similar item: one is in the permanent exhibition of the Israel Museum and was almost ceryainly crafted by the same silversmith seven years earlier. The second is in the Gross Family Collection; it too was apparently crafted by the same silversmith ten years earlier.
Impressive and extraordinary Algerian Tallit bag: whereas textile Tallit bags are most common, silver ones are extremely rare. The size and volume of the bag make a monumental impression.
Quality and spectacular silversmithing crafted by an expert silversmith. The highest level of silver hammering and embossing.
One side of the bag is decorated with the Temple Menorah and additional objects, two gilded Hamsas and decorative plant motifs. Above the Menorah, there is a gilded plate with gilded Hebrew letter of the owner's name - 'מימון - כאמון'. On the other side of the bag, two large gilded lions holding agilded shield with the year the bag was crafted in it - 1946.
French contemporary hallmark.
A rare and valuable Jewish work of art fit for a museum.
