Rare Bronze Chanukkiya. Italy the 17th-18th Century (?)
Rare and special Hanukkah Menorah, Renaissance-style, decorated with figures of cherubs, sirens and dolphins.
This Chanukkiya is an old replica of an early Italian Hanukkah Menorah from the 16th century which appears in the catalog of the Stieglitz Family Collection: see - Stieglitz Collection: Masterpieces of Jewish Art, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 1987, Catalog 125.
The Renaissance (Rebirth) is the title of cultural, philosophical and artistic movement which was first centered in Italy in the late Middle-Ages and gradually spread throughout Europe.
The Hanukkah festival and the lighting of the candles celebrate the dedication of the Temple and The Hasmoneans' victory over the army of Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 B.C.E. According to the Sages, the festival celebrates the Miracle of the Oil by which a single jug of oil, with oil for lighting the Menorah for a single day, was used to light the Temple's Menorah for eight days (Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 21b). This miracle is publicized by placing the Chanukkiya in plain sight for all to see.
