Spanish School of the 17th Century - Salome receiving the head of the Baptist
Oil on panel. Dimensions: 98 x 62 cm. This dramatic scene, characteristic of 17th-century Spanish painting, shows the crucial moment when Salome receives the head of Saint John the Baptist on a platter, accompanied by figures in solemnly static attitudes. The crudeness of the subject is tempered by the theatricality of the glances and gestures, which is intensified by the use of pronounced chiaroscuro that focuses attention on the decapitation. This work reflects the tendency of Baroque painting to represent sacrifice and martyrdom as expressions of faith and power.
