Treasure Book of Sermons, 1937, signed by the chief rabbi of Sofia, Bulgaria, Rabbi Dr. Asher Hananel Isaac. * Rabbi Dr. Asher Hananel Isaac (Bulgarian: Ашеp Ицхак Хананель; 1 July 1895, the fat, the Principality of Bulgaria - 26 September 1964, Sofia, People's Republic of Bulgaria) was a historian, Chief Rabbi of Sofia, and later chief rabbi of Bulgaria. In 1943, Rabbi Hananel struggling with Rabbi Daniel Zion to save Jews from Sofia deportation to the death camps. After coming to Rabbi Daniel Zion to Israel, was appointed chief rabbi of Bulgaria and decided to stay in Bulgaria with the remaining small community. In 1960, the communist regime abolished the post of chief rabbi in 1961 expropriated the synagogue in Sofia Community authority. Rabbi Hananel caught in a confrontation with the authorities, which followed tried and imprisoned on false charges, while the state of his health deteriorating. After intense international pressure, Rabbi Hananel was released from prison and shortly after his release, he died.
