Ha-Melitz or HaMelitz (Hebrew: המליץ) was the first Hebrew newspaper in the Russian Empire. It was founded by Alexander Zederbaum in Odessa in 1860. "Ha-Melits" was first published as a weekly, and from 1886 it began to be published daily. Since 1871 it was published in St. Petersburg. The publication was suspended several times due to lack of support or by order of the authorities. In 1893, Leon Rabinovich replaced Zederbaum as editor. Ha-Melitz was a representative of the progressive or Haskalah movement, and even such a harsh critic as Abraham Kovner admitted that it was “more useful to the Jews than other Hebrew newspapers” (Heker Dabar, pp. 52ff., Warsaw , 1866). Although he was not as literary or scientific as some of his contemporaries, Ha-Melitza generally had more news and interesting debates, and was therefore more popular. J. A. Goldenblum was associated with Zederbaum in his publications for many years. Abraham Shalom Friedberg and Judah Leib Gordon were the most famous of his associate editors. Almost all the prominent Jewish writers of his time contributed to it. Several collections of literary and scientific articles appeared as appendices to Ha-Melitz during Zederbaum's time: Kohelet (St. Petersburg, 1881), Migdonot (1883), Melita Ahad Minni Elef (after case of appearance No. 1000; St. Petersburg, 1884), “Lekeh Amarim” (1889) 1893). Among similar publications produced by Zederbaum's successor were Ha-Ekhev (St. Petersburg, 1894), Ha-Osem and Ha-Gat (1897), and Ha-Gan (1899). Ha-Melitz was published periodically until 1903.
