המחבר מגדולי רבני פולין, היה תלמידם של רבי ישראל יהושע מקוטנא בעל "ישועות ישראל", של רבי מנחם מנדל 'השרף' מקוצק, ושל בעל החידושי הרי"מ מגור שאף נתן לו כתב סמיכה. היה רב בכמה קהילות: קיקל(-קיקאל), -תרח, (שרנצק (-שנרצקי), פודמביץ (-פודמניצא), אוסטרלנקא, ושעפס. בנו הוא רבי יעקב חיים זליג מטשערוינסק.
