Sir Moses Montefiore, the most famous Jew in Britain in the nineteenth century, was born in 1784 to a Jewish family from Italy. Montefiore's first involvement outside the borders of Britain occurred in 1840 when the Jews of Damascus were accused of a blood libel. With the help of the French Adolf Carmia, he succeeded in obtaining the release of some of the prisoners and, thanks to their efforts, a decree was issued by the Sultan condemning the plot and granting equal rights to the Jews in the Ottoman Empire. Between 1827 and 1874 he visited the Holy Land seven times. He worked to promote the education and welfare of the Jewish population and cultivated their employment in industry and agriculture. Helped to settle Jews outside the walls of Jerusalem by building the windmill at Yemin Moshe, and by establishing Mishkenot Sha'ananim (formerly Batei Mahase). Obverse - the portraits of Moshe and Yehudit Montefiore. Inscribed on the margins: 1885-1854. Moshe and Yehudit Montefiore, 1882-1862. Reverse - "Mishkenot Sha'ananim" and the name of the house in Hebrew and English. In the background is a windmill of the Yemin Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem. The verse, "For it is time to chana that a time has come" (Tehillim 122: 14) in Hebrew and English. Edge - State emblem and the words "State of Israel" in Hebrew and English "Silver 935" and in English "Silver". Counting - numbered 1543 were melted - 52.
