The Austrian photographer Dora Philippine Kallmus (Madame D'Ora) gained experience in Hans Makart junior's studio and was the first woman to gain access to the theory courses at the graphic arts teaching and research institute. She took photography and retouching lessons with Nicola Perscheid in Berlin and opened the d'Ora photo studio in Vienna in 1907 under her stage name Madame d'Ora. But she became known above all for her portraits of the Viennese artistic and intellectual scene, such as Alma Mahler-Werfel, Arthur Schnitzler, Anna Pawlowa, Gustav Klimt and Emilie Flöge, Marie Gutheil-Schoder, Pau Casals, Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps and Anita Berber . In 1916 she photographed the coronation of Charles I as King of Hungary and produced a series of portraits of the imperial family. There were close contacts with the fashion department of the Wiener Werkstätte. In Paris, she became the main photographer of the actor and singer Maurice Chevalier; she photographed Josephine Baker, Tamara de Lempicka, Fritzi Massary, Marlene Dietrich, Pablo Picassi and Coco Chanel. As a fashion photographer, she worked for “Die Dame”, “Madame” and “Officiel de la Couture et de la Mode” and Parisian fashion houses such as Rochas, Patou, Lanvin and Chanel. Madame d'Ora returned to Austria in 1946 and photographed refugee camps and destroyed Vienna. Although she returned to social photography and created portraits of Somerset Maugham, Yehudi Menuhin and Marc Chagall, her late work also includes the drastic " Schlachthof-Serie (Slaughterhouse Series).
