Chavat Yair. Copy Previously Owned by Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter of Gur. Stamps, Signature and Glosses

Shu"t Chavat Yair,  Lemberg, 1896. First edition of the Baruch Ta'am glosses by Rabbi Baruch Teomim Frankel of Leipnik, father-in-law of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. Tradition maintains that the Sanzer rebbe was the one who edited his father-in-law's work, Baruch Ta'am, for printing.

The top of the title page bears an owner's inscription handwritten by the gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Alter of Gur: "Hashem has granted me this book, signed Yehudah Aryeh ben R' Nechemiah shlit"a of Gur." Two of his owner's stamps appear in the margins of the title page. Likewise, among the book's leaves are dozens of marks and emphases as well as several handwritten glosses.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter.

134 leaves, 33 cm. Amongst the book's leaves are many newspaper clippings whose content has not been examined.

Very fine condition: Brittle paper, simple binding with blemish in the spine.
